THE SPINNEY CAMBORNE
WELCOME TO THE SPINNEY 2024
There will be a lot happening this year.
See below for upcoming events.
The Spinney is a green area of peace and tranquillity situated in the heart of Camborne.
Registered Charity number: 1097675
Registered name: 'The Spinney Doorstep Green'
Located behind Camborne Parish Church, with an entrance in Rectory Gardens, this idyllic rest area with its natural beauty is an ideal place to take a moment out from the noise and bustle of the town.
HISTORY OF THE CAMBORNE SPINNEY
Once part of the old rectory gardens and adjacent to the Parish Church this quiet oasis has historical and spiritual connections. Since 2001 projects have been undertaken to enhance this valuable space for all. In 2004 the Spinney in Camborne underwent extensive development at a cost of more than £100,000. This was mostly funded by the Countryside Agency's Doorstep Green Project. Since then the space has been managed as a registered charity by a committee of volunteers. Ongoing financial assistance has been from the Town Council and other funding bodies.
ORIGINS OF A SPINNEY
A Spinney is defined as a small stand of trees, a copse, a little wood or a thorny thicket. Its first known use was in 1597. Ultimately it comes from the Latin "spinetium", from "spina" thorn.
There have been many literary references over the centuries. For example, in THE QUEST FOR THE GOLDEN GIRL by Richard Le Gallienne [1896] "...on this particular May morning, while his fancy simply ran riot in the marginal decorations of woodland and Spinney, quaint embroidered flowers and copses full of exquisitely painted and wonderfully trained birds of song."
THE SPINNEY ACTION GROUP
We organise work parties to keep the Spinney a great place for all the community. We always need more volunteers, so anyone is welcome to come along and join in. As well as getting some gentle outdoor exercise you will meet some wonderfully friendly and like-minded people. Some of the tasks for the future are... to restore the ornamental ironworks, plant native trees, restore the children's play area and seating, enhance natural habitats for wildlife, and build bird boxes and wood piles. These are just a few of our many plans. If any of the above takes your fancy please contact us or just come along on the day. See this website for details or notices in the Spinney.
